So, i’ve recently become interrested in the magplar playstyle, and i felt like the builds that were out there for magplars were not utlizing their full potential, i theorycrafted abit and came up with a very different build then the usual, and its working extremely well, so i thought to share it, hope you guys enjoy.
- Race
High elf is what i went with, and is for this particular build the best choice, the bonus magicka will increase your damage, and the Elemental Talent passive will increase your attack damage with staffs, another viable choice is Breton, you would have a tiny bit more sustain but the damage would be slightly less, the difference is very minimal so its not a big deal.
- Attribute Points:
I run 8 points into Health, as i dont have undaunted passives on my character yet, i run with 17k health and around 37,3k magicka, when i finish my undaunted passives though these stats will increase, and i would recommend going all points into magicka.
- Passives:
- Mundus Stone:
At the moment i run with The Thief for trials, and The Atronach for Vmsa, I’m very convinced The Thief is better over The Shadow when you have a full raid with a high Warhorn uptime.
- Champion Points:
I am at the CP cap wich at this time of writing is 501.
- Warrior – This tree doesnt really matter much, it wont affect your dps directly in any way, so where you put your points is sort of optional, but anyways, this is what i run when doing Trials and Veteran Dungeons.
- The Steed:
2 Points into Block Expertise.
28 Points into Spell Shield.
- The Lady:
4 Points into Thick Skinned.
4 Points into Light Armor Focus.
100 Points into Hardy. Note: Only put 100 points into Hardy if you are doing Sanctum Ophidia, if you are in any other veteran dungeon or trial i would swap this amount into Elemental Defender, putting 27 points into Hardy instead.
27 Points into Elemental Defender.
- The Lord:
2 Points into Quick Recovery.
- Mage - This is the most important tree, every point you put into here will affect your dps, this is what i run for any scenario, and im convinced this is the optimal setup for this particular build.
- The Ritual:
100 points into Thaumaturge. – Almost all of your damage you output is Magic, therefore you want to dump the majority of your CP’s into here.
- The Apprentice:
1 Point into Elemental Expert. – This will increase your light attack damage with your staff, and the damage of your Vampire Bane.
1 Point into Spell Erosion. – Only 1 point into this, as far as i know this is still bugged and only the first point will actually do anything.
65 Points into Elfborn.
- The Serpent - Nothing special about this tree, you could put the points wherever you want, the only thing that affects dps directly here besides sustain is the Synergizer passive, wich you should make sure you have atleast 30 points into Arcanist for.
- The Tower:
98 Points into Magician.
- The Lover:
69 Points into Arcanist.
- Gear Sets:
- Armour – These are the “BoS” (best-in slot) items for running this build, these are not what i use currently, i do not have the right armor type and trait for my monster set, although i am actively farming for it.
Head: Kena (Light Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Shoulders: Kena (Light Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Chest: Julianos (Heavy Armor, DIvines, Magicka Enchantment)
Hands: Julianos (Light Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Waist: Julianos (Light Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Legs: Julianos (Medium Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Feet: Julianos (Light Armor, Divines, Magicka Enchantment)
Note: You want to run all divine trait, and 5 light, 1 medium, 1 light to maximize the return from your Undaunted Passives.
- Weapons:
- Bar #1 (Single Target DPS): The Maelstroms Inferno Staff, Trait: Sharpened (preferrably) or Precise (optional) – If you do not have this, the build will not work, it is HEAVILY based around how this enchantment works, and it takes advantage of light weaving with your staff in order to consistently proc Kena, and also the dot damage and bonus damage for light weaves from Elemental Blockade, if you do not have this staff, i would go dual wield on both bars, and use blazing spear instead of elemental blockade, i HIGHLY recommend farming for it though, it is totally worth it!
- Bar #2 (Aoe + Execute Damage): The Maelstroms Inferno Staff, Trait: Precise (preferrably), or Sharpened (optional) – This is not as required as on the first bar, you can perfectly fine play with x2 nirnhoned torugs pact swords, but due to recent tests i decided to switch from that to double inferno staff in order to always have kena procced during executing, at the cost of slightly less AoE DPS.
- Jewellery:
- Necklace: Willpower. (Arcance, Spell Damage Enchant)
- Ring 1: Willpower. (Arcance, Spell Damage Enchant)
- Ring 2: Willpower. (Arcance, Spell Damage Enchant)
Note: If you have problems managing your magicka, or if your group is not fully optimized (no siphon spirit or magicka orbs), you can switch out one of the spell damage enchants for reducing spell cost or recovery.
- Skill Bars:
- Bar 1 – Single Target DPS

1) Puncturing Sweeps – This is your main DPS Ability, it’s Your Molten Whip, Your Force Pulse, Your Funnel Health.
2) Vampire’s Bane – This is an incredibly powerfull dot, keeping it up 100% will give you a nice 1,5-2k dps.
3) Proximity Detonation – One of the best, and most fun to use abilities to use in this game. It hits incredibly hard (i’ve witnessed upto 50k vs daedric enemiesso far), and it’s an instant cast. WIN!
4) Blockade Of Fire – The damage of this ability itself isn’t great (about 1k dps on most fights), but the bonus damage it applies to light and heavy attack damage from your maelstrom staff makes it worth casting in a rotation, i will still be doing more tests to find out for certain if it’s worth casting or not, i will update this when i do. NOTE: The enchantment effect of the MSA staff is currently broken, for the light attack buff to apply properly the mob has to be in the “center” of the Blockade effect, i will still continue to use this however.
5) Inner Light – Nothing special, this toggle-ability will give you 5% max magicka and the Major spellcrit buff.
6) The ultimate, Dawnbreaker Of Smiting – This is another point where my build stands out from the rest, i have done testing, and this ability deals higher damage on avarage for the initial hit (around 1,8k more tooltip damage then my Shooting Star), and the DoT deals almost 11k more damage on the tooltip (unbuffed), over a shorter period of time, in addition its also a LOT cheaper to cast then shooting star, allowing you to almost spam it. The highest i have ever seen this crit on daedrics is 67k!!!
*) Rearming Trap / Blazing Spear / Purifying Light – If you do not have Proximity Detonation unlocked, i would recommend using one of these skills in your rotation to take its place, if you play without warhorn in your group i would reccomend rearming trap, if you are a high elf and play with warhorn in your group i would recommend Purifying Light.
- Bar 2 – AOE & Execute DPS

1) Radiant Oppression – This is your execute, when your target is <25% health you want to switch away from your Singletarget Bar and cast this, everytime you cast it you want to do a light attack first, this will keep your molag kena proc going as you execute, it will also apply the dots from your weapon enchantments, wich is defineatly a nice bonus.
2) Channeled Focus – This is your only “flexible” spot, if you are running a daily and dont want to waste your precious spellpower potions, you can slot for example Structured Entropy here for the Major Sorcery Buff, Rearming trap can also fit in here, wich i would use occasionally on fights such as Mantikora, while aoeing though, and especially if your group has little support (magicka orbs & siphon spirit), channeled focus is a nice help to your magicka sustain.
3) Solar Barrage – Your main Aoe ability, it’s a very powerfull AoE attack that also applies the Empower buff for your next attack.
4) Blazing Spear – You want to keep this down 24/7 while doing aoe, when it runs out, reapply it, and keep spamming Solar Barrage.
5) Inner Light – See Above
6) The ultimate, Shooting Star, never ever cast this, you only slot it for the passive 2% magicka bonus.
- Rotation:
This is a description of how you would use this build in a mantikora fight, and the rotation of skills.
First you activate your Proximity Detonation, Cast your Dawnbreaker, then cast Blockade of fire, light attack, vampire bane, light attack, puncturing sweeps + light attack x2 , light attack, reapply proximity detonation, light attack, puncturing sweeps, light attack, blockade of fire, light attack, vampire bane, light attack puncturing sweeps x2, etc etc, once the target reaches 25% health you swap bars and use Radiant Oppresion and pop a light attack inbetween to proc your Kena.
Note: Use your ultimate whenever its available.
- Light weaving Puncturing Sweeps:
This is extremely hard, and requires alot of practice to do with a inferno staff, the benefit from mastering this is a LOT more light attack damage, and as well consistent Kena procs, instead of just the occasional procs with dual wield, here is a gif of this type of weaving in action:

- Vampirism.
As you could probably tell from my passives, my character is a Vampire, this will not affect your dps in any way, the only reason i am a Vampire is for PvP, and i can manage it fine in PvE, you might have problems in certain dungeons if you are not carefull or have a bad healer though.
- Importance of group support.
For this build to be viable, your healer HAS to use “Siphon Spirit” on bosses, the reason is this will restore magicka on attacks, elemental drain does the same thing, but only when you hit with elemental damage (blockade of fire, light attacks), siphon spirit procs off magic damage.
You will also need magicka orbs (necrotic orb) while aoeing to sustain your magicka.
- DPS Parses:
I will update this section as soon as i run trials again, at the moment our raid group is still on vacation for the holidays, so check back very soon!
Shoutouts:
@EgoRush for help with formatting!
@Meshal for helping with various testing and inspiring me to show him magplar can be done better! ;D
Final Note: So that’s my Magplar build for 2.2, i will actively update this thread with improvements in the future, this is far from the “final” build, and i believe i can make a lot of good changes to it once i get to testing in trials (our team is still on holiday break atm).
