Hypernova Sorcerer: Magicka DPS build. 2.3.7 Thieves Guild DLC. By: Tunaboy
Hello and welcome to my Hypernova build, the largest explosion of fire and lightning in the universe. This build is a Magicka based dps role in PvE content, in a group setting. Average 25k on main 2 bars. 40k on your overload bar. There are many skills you can swap in and out to achieve similar numbers to fit your play-style and content (Proximity Detonation, Elemental Ring) just to name a couple. Provided your healer(s) is running Aggressive Warhorn, Elemental Drain, and Siphon Spirit resources should not be an issue to achieve max damage per second. I’ve tested most every setup since launch 2 years ago and these are my conclusions to date.
- Attributes: Magicka 64 Health 0 Stamina 0
- Race: Altmer is best due to their passives.
- Champion points: (capped at 501)
Mage: 96 Elemental Expert 35 Elfborn 16 Spell Erosion 20 Thaumaturge
Thief: 100 Arcanist 67 Magician
Warrior: Hardy 63 Elemental Defender 63 Bastion 31 block expertise 10
- Skills:
1 bar or main bar: Inferno Staff. Crystal Fragments, Force Pulse, Elemental Blockade, Innerlight, Bound Aegis, Ultimate: Meteor/Suppression Field/Overload

2 bar or back bar: Duel wield swords. Hardened Ward/Boundless Storm – Power Surge – Liquid Lightning – Innerlight – Bound Aegis Ultimate: Overload

3 bar or overload bar: Rearming trap, Mage’s wrath, Liquid Lightning, Innerlight, Bound Aegis

- Gear:
Armor: 5 piece Juliano’s: All Divines. All max Magicka enchants. Chest heavy (for maximum armor), Belt, Shoes, Breeches, Gloves (Light armor). 2 piece Kena set (Divines) Helm Medium, Shoulders light armor.

Jewelry: 3 Arcane Willpower jewelry set enchanted with Spell Damage Enchants.

Weapons: Inferno staff with Fire damage enchant and Nirnhoned trait.

I may swap for a lightning staff sometimes to play with the 5% increased damage we do as sorcerers. Same trait Nirnhoned but with a shock enchant.
2 bar we will be using 2 Torug’s pact swords to take advantage of the passives at max level, also Nirnhoned but no need to enchant as we will never attack melee with them.

- Mundus Stone:
I’m using the Shadow. I’ve found that the comparable Thief stone does well in shorter fights but Shadow out-performs in a trial or longer boss fight setting. And who can resist 65k Overload light attacks.
- Rotation: This is where it takes skill, practice, and some good luck. Until you have this down perfectly you may not see the same numbers I am acquiring.
Depending on the boss/mobs you will want a different rotation, but always keep up your Power Surge ability. You can either weave two light attacks for maximum dps, or weaving the medium attacks with force pulse will give you slightly lower dps but more freedom and resources.
Starting on your second bar, Power Surge > Boundless Storm > Liquid Lightning Swap to front bar (inferno staff/lightning staff), > Elemental Blockade > then weave your medium/light attacks with force pulse casting Crystal Fragments when the instant cast procs. Elemental Blockade will run out about the same time as your Liquid Lightning so cast that first before switching to re-applying Liquid Lightning. You can get 3 of these rotations in before needing to re-cast Power Surge. This is your Overload Ultimate generation rotation.
As for your overload rotation this is used for maximum dps. As before start on your 2nd bar: Power Surge > Boundless Storm > activate your overload bar > Rearming Trap > Liquid Lightning > Overload Light attack for 10 seconds > Liquid Lightning > Rearming Trap > Overload light attack Etc. Only pop out of Overload when you have lost Power Surge or if you need to Ward (should you have that skill slotted). When the mob or boss falls below 20% health you will change your rotation again.
2 overloads to proc Kena then Mage’s Wrath for the duration of Kena then 2 overload light attacks to keep that buff up, and so on.

Record dps is 67k on Maw of Infernal vCoA, keep in mind daedroth take extra damage to lightning. You get the idea.
Notes:
I didn’t go into a lot of depth of why this is better then other sets, skills, CP’s, etc.
Hours of testing and forum research. If you have any questions please ask.
With 501 Cp’s you can solo most normal dungeons at v16 with Hardened ward.
Depending on the mobs resistances you will see lower or higher numbers
Low end dps of this build would be below 20k and high end 60k.
If you cannot reach 20k it is most likely your rotation as “You” are the biggest factor in this setups dps.
I will post more parses as I get them.
- Credits: I would like to thank many people throughout the game and many forum writers, as we have all learned from each other I would like to contribute my findings as well. Asayre has a great and detailed post about the math behind the game which has really helped. Good luck and happy gaming!
