Hello! Most of you know me as Latter, I’ve been playing ESO since early Beta-Stages almost 3 years ago, and i’ve been playing my Magicka Templar DD religiously since the Wrothgar DLC, with the Dark Brotherhood patch being right around the corner, i present to you the updated version of the Magplar by Latter!
Note: Do keep in mind this build is heavily built around vMoL, but works completely fine for vet dungeons and other trials, and is still the best possible setup for most these
- Race choices
I personally prefer being a Dark Elf (7% Fire Damage, 9% Max Magicka, 6% Stamina & Fire Resistance), as it gives bonus Fire Damage for your fire DoTs and some protection to help you survive if you choose to go as a vampire, However the differences between Dark and High Elf is really minimal, if you want a bit more sustain or also PvP on the side High Elf might be a better choice for you, at the moment I’m still a High Elf myself as I’m working on leveling a Dark Elf character.
- Attributes/Food/Potions
I run all my attributes into Magicka.
I use Max HP + Magicka Food
I use “Essence of Spell Power” for Major Sorcery,Major Intellect & Major Prophecy as well as Magicka Sustain

- Gear
The ideal “Best In Slot” setup:
Helmet: Molag Kena, (Light Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Shoulders: Molag Kena, (Light Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Chest: Twice-Born Star, (Heavy Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Legs: Twice-Born Star, (Medium Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Gloves: Twice-Born Star, (Light Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Belt: Twice-Born Star, (Light Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Shoes: Twice-Born Star, (Light Armor, Divines, Maximum Magicka Enchantment)
Note: For AoE I swap out x2 Molag Kena for x1 Kena Helmet, x1 Julianos shoulder, with Julianos dual wield.

- Jewellery & Weapons difference in AoE & Single Target
For AoE & Bossfights with many adds the ideal setup would be:
Sword #1: Julianos, Sharpened, Increase Spell Damage Weapon Enchant.
Sword #2: Julianos, Sharpened, Flame Damage Enchant.
Staff: Maelstroms Inferno Staff, Infused.
Note: For AoE i’ll swap my x2 Kena for x1 Julianos shoulder, keeping 1 Kena piece, giving me 3 pieces of Julianos, and 1 piece Kena.
Necklace: Willpower, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.
Ring #1: Willpower, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.
Ring #2: Willpower, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.

Note: You can also use this setup (with aether/moondancer jewellry) if you feel like you cant sustain Kena.
For pure Single-Target damage the ideal setup would be:
Sword #1: Moondancer, Sharpened, Increase Spell Damage Weapon Enchant.
Sword #2: Moondancer, Sharpened, Flame Damage Enchant.
Staff: Maelstroms Inferno Staff, Infused.
Necklace: Moondancer, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.
Ring #1: Moondancer, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.
Ring #2: Moondancer, Arcane, Increase Spell Damage Enchant.

So why Moondancer swords? Well, think of it this way, if you were to use 3 moondancer jewellery and 2 torugs swords, you would get the exact same stats as if you used Moondancer swords, Except 1 big difference, with Moondancer swords you would get the same Spell Damage buff but included the 5 piece bonus for the Synergy-Blessing, free spelldmg/recovery, why not if its free right?
I know however this is a different set to obtain, so far i have personally not gotten these items myself, so if you don’t have Moondancer, the best setup would be Kena,Twice Born,Moondancer/Aether x3 (Alternatively Willpower x3), Torugs Pact x2, If you feel like you cant sustain Kena you can swap x2 Kena and x2 Torugs to x1 Kena, x3 Julianos with 1 Julianos armor piece and 2 Swords, this is definetly the best option if you’re not using Kena, much better then Valkyn Skoria.
- Weapon Enchants & The Prismatic Rune
This is an important part of the build now, as every weapon enchant in the game has been buffed heavily.
Increase Weapon Damage Enchant

The only enchant we will be using always without switching out for certain situations, it increases Weapon And Spell power, it’s extremely powerful and having a 100% uptime on this enchant is HUGELY important, especially in execute phases.
Flame Damage Enchant

This is definetely a good damage boost, especially with the new patch and especially if you’re a Dark Elf, or even a High Elf, it deals some Flame Damage and has a 25% Chance to apply the “Burning” DoT effect dealing flame damage over time. (Picture)
Prismatic Enchant

This is the most important one, this enchant got a HUGE buff! On tooltip it says it deals 7428 damage against Daedra, now add up your crit damage bonus, the resistance and flat dmg increases on the boss, your increased warhorn resources, and this thing will likely crit for anywhere between 20-30k on average, i predict it will be doing at least 2-3k dps in any fight vs a Daedra, keep in mind, the last boss in vMoL is daedric, this is why it’s so important!
- Poisons
Perhaps one of the biggest features of the Dark Brotherhood patch is the addition of Poisons, unfortunately I have to say i think these are mainly meant for PvP, however there are a couple of noteworthy combos here, that will be used in PvE.
Most Noteworthy the “Minor Vulnerability” poisons, which is going to be used by Healers and Tanks to provide 8% more damage for the entire group, if this can have a 100% uptime it will be huge, however, the Infallible Aether set does provide this buff also, and it does not stack, it’s a good poison, probably the most usefull debuff introduced in this patch, but once one of your groupmembers aquires a full set of Aether it won’t really be anything worth considering.

For large AoE fights in vMoL I will be using this potion on my Staff bar, it won’t proc much, but honestly, who needs light attack damage in a huge AoE fight? Completely useless, right? Some bonus Poison Damage is definetely better.

- Champion Points
Note: If you’re doing Sanctum Ophidia i’d strongly recommend swapping 100 elemental defender around for 100 hardy.
- Skill Bars for different Scenarios
I have alot of variations for what skills i use in particular fights, i slot and remove certain skills for specific bosses and dungeons, and it can get confusing at times, so i recommend using an addon such as Wykkyd’s Outfitter to quickly swap your skill bars with 1 button press.
- General Setup
Bar #1 – Dual Wield (Main DPS Bar)

1) Puncturing Sweeps – Your Bread and butter DPS, the main damage skill, it deals high damage and has a chance to proc your Burning Light passive, by far the best alternative for a Templar when it comes to Single-Target DPS.
2) Reflective Light – One of my personal favorites, which morph of this skill you choose is pretty much upto your personal preference, however i prefer Reflective Light, it’s not difficult to keep 100% Uptime on it, and if you do keep 100% Uptime, it will do more damage then Vampires Bane even if you only hit 1 target, because the Initial hit does more damage then the DoT, and you would have more Initial Hits then if you were to use Vampire’s Bane, which lasts longer.
3) Radiant Oppresion – Doesn’t even need an explanation, this is the most powerful execute in the game, by far.
4) Blazing Spear – Your main AoE ability, cast this when there is 3 or more targets.
5) Inner Light – Basically slotted for the 7% Additional Magicka, a great damage boost.
6) Ultimate: Shooting Star – Easily the best damage ultimate for Templars, why this morph over Ice Comet? Well, if you’re in a group you most likely have a DK using Engulfing Flames on mobs, that will increase the flame damage they take by 10%, basically making this the higher damage morph, as well as giving some ult regen. If you’re a Dark Elf this is also far better with 7% Flame damage.
Bar #2 – Inferno Staff (Backup Buff Bar)

1) Channeled Focus – This is sort of a flexible spot, although i do recommend running some sort of Magicka-Sustain skill here, this is a very Magicka-heavy build and takes alot of practice in sustaining, this skill helps, also the extra defense in AoE situations in vMoL is a nice bonus.
2) Rearming Trap – One of my personal favorites, and although it is often widely used IMO one of the most underrated skills in the game, the damage is just “meh”, especially this patch when they changed it from Magical damage to Physical damage, but they did make it a dot, so it might be better in some situations, but the main reason i use this skill is for the “Minor Force” (12% Critical Damage Bonus), it’s a big bonus that helps with DPS.
3) Ritual of Retribution – If you’re in a pure single-target fight this is also a flexible spot if you need to use something else, they changed this skill to now deal Magic Damage as well as heal, the damage is really really nice in AoE fights, its basicly a Magicka Caltrops.. It deals about the same damage as Caltrops, has the same Range, but also Heals, unorteneatly it doesn’t have nearly as long duration though.
4) Blockade of Fire – Amazing DoT! This will always be one of your highest DPS outputs, the Light attack bonus damage it gives if you have the Maelstrom Staff is also a notable DPS increase. I use the Duration morph, but it’s mainly preference, although i think you will get higher numbers with this morph especially if you have a Maelstrom staff.
5) Inner Light – As Above.
6) Ultimate: Shooting Star – As Above.
- 1st & 2nd Boss vMoL Changes to Skill Bars.
I basically use the same skills as above, but from personal preference i like using Consuming Trap (Soul Trap) Instead of Channeled Focus here, i know it sounds completely ridicolous.. But think about it for abit, i’m moving way way too much in this fight for Channeled Focus to be a reliable source of Magicka Sustain, when the adds spawn and i put down my Wall of Elements, i’ll just cast SoulTrap While swapping bars, when they die i’ll get 10% Magicka from each mob when they die.. So when the adds die.. I’m basicly on full magicka again, seriously under rated skill in my opinion.

- 3rd Boss vMoL Changes to Skill Bars
Here there is quite a few changes, so i will list them in the fashion the General setup is listed.
Weapons remain the same, only skills are changed.
Note: If skill is marked *, it’s a replacement compared to the General Setup.
Bar #1 – Dual Wield (Main DPS Bar)
1) Puncturing Sweeps – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
2) Reflective Light – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
3) Radiant Oppresion – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
4) *Rearming Trap – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
5) Inner Light – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
6) Ultimate: Shooting Star – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
Bar #2 – Inferno Staff (Backup Buff Bar)
1) *Harness Magicka – Why this skill in this particular fight? Well, basically every damage output in this bossfight is considered Magical damage, you also need some sort of protection especially if you’re doing hardmode, and it also helps with Sustain!
2) *Ritual of Retribution – I only cast this when A. I know the boss will be standing in it for the full duration of the skill, or B. When the Hulk spawns.
3) *Force Pulse – At some points you need to do ranged damage, and can’t go melee, if this isn’t the case never cast this skill, it’s nice to have for those situations though, you would loose a LOT of DPS by not doing anything if you couldn’t have a backup skill to spam ranged.
4) Elemental Blockade – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
5) Inner Light – Read info under the General Setup listed above.
6) The Ultimate: Soul Assault – Here’s an example of how this would work: The fight starts, the first platform is over and the big add (the Hulk) spawns, you use a shooting star on it, it dies, as soon as you get enough ultimate, cast Soul Assault, you will have another shooting star up again by the time the next Hulk spawns, result? Free DPS! Now, why Soul Assault? Trust me, i did a LOT of testing on this, Soul Assault is the best option, when i’m fully buffed with Kena,SPC,Minor Sorcery,Major Sorcery etc etc the tooltip damage shows over 90k.. That’s the tooltip damage! Now imagine if it crits, the resistance of the boss, minor slayer, minor vulnerability, etc! It’s definetly more powerfull then it seems.
- vMoL & vSO AoE Changes to Skill Bars
In Maw of Lorkhaj there is 2 major AoE events both that last several minutes and are extremely difficult, therefore it’s more then reasonable to have a custom setup focusing solely on AoE damage.
Here there is quite a few changes, so i will list them in the fashion the General setup is listed.
Note: Pretty much every skill with a couple exceptions are replacements so they will not be marked with * regardless.
Bar #1 – Dual Wield (Main AoE Bar)
1) Reflective Light – This hits a ton of targets, and afflicts everything with a DoT.
2) Proximity Detonation – One of the most powerful AoE ability in the game, charge it up, 8 seconds later it will explode from anywhere upto 70k damage.
3) Radiant Oppresion – For executing high priority mobs (Sun-Eaters,Overchargers etc)
4) Blazing Spear – Main AoE ability
5) Inner Light – For 7% Magicka Bonus
6) Ultimate: Shooting Star – Mainly slotted for 2% Max Magicka bonus, as in vMoL i personally use Nova on my second bar, but if you aren’t put on Nova-Duty this is definetely the best Ultimate to use.
Bar #2 – Inferno Staff (Self-Buffs & Single-Target)
1) Puncturing Sweeps – Whenever you are focusing 1-2 mobs in AoE i use this instead of Blazing Spear, any more then 2 and Blazing Spear is again the best damage.
2) Channeled Focus – I try to stand in this as much as i can for Magicka Sustain, the Major protection buffs help with Surviving the high damage also.
3) Ritual of Retribution – Now deals damage aswell as healing, extremely nice damage, ticks for upto 4-5k every 2 seconds, heals and purges allies, short duration though.
4) Elemental Blockade – I try to swap bars to keep this skill up, the damage is insane, i use the Duration morph, but it’s mainly preference, although i think you will get higher numbers with this morph especially if you have a Maelstrom staff.
5) Inner Light – As Above
6) Ultimate: Solar Prison – In our group we are doing such speedy tactics this skill is required from the Templars in order for the group to stay alive, however if you’re not running such tactics you can go ahead and put Shooting Star here.
Note: I use the “Damage Health IX” Poison on my Inferno staff for AoE, check the “Poisons” section above.
Note #2: Instead of x2 Molag Kena, for AoE i use x3 Julianos, x1 Kena, check the “Gear” section above.
- Rotation (And When to Use What)
For General Single target:
Light attack weave Puncturing Sweeps, keep Reflective Light up as much as you can, swap Bars and light attack weave Elemental Blockade followed by Rearming Trap (And a Proxy Det/Ritual of Retribution if there’s alot of enemies nearby), swap back and continue Sweeping and keeping Reflective Light up, swap back once Elemental Blockade runs out and make sure you proc Overkill.
If you want a more detailed showcase on how the rotation works in a perfect scenario, check out one of my videos to see how i play my build.
- Importance of Group Support
This build is extremely magicka heavy, if you don’t have Siphon Spirit and Elemental Drain it will be nearly impossible to sustain, for AoE you also need the occasional Necrotic Orb, this build needs proper group support, it’s an expensive build to run, but by far the most effective.
Note: If you still can’t sustain it with all the support (somehow), you could go x1 kena x3 Julianos instead of x2 Kena, x2 Torugs (Swords), this is still a very good setup, but it will be noticably less damage.
- Vampirism
I strongly recommend you become a Vampire, you get 10% free Magicka/Stamina recovery and it helps on sustain, if you’re unsure about the fire damage bonus thats fine, this is also where being a Dark Elf comes in handy, you won’t really be more vulnerable to fire then other races from your fire protection passive.
