Leveling gear

I’m an advocate of the idea that one can level just fine using disposable gear. Even so, the game is old enough that new characters are likely either to belong to experienced players, or to belong to new characters who have experienced-character friends and acquaintances. Either way, it’s possible to get pretty decent crafted gear, and also to easily afford its repairs.

So what do you do for leveling gear? My choices tend to be:

  • Training trait for everything, usually including the weapons.
  • Blue quality for everything, except perhaps purple for the weapons.
  • 5+3 on set bonuses (or 5+4 where relevant), except for special cases.
  • Julianos + Seducers for magicka sets (5 Julianos except at very low levels).
  • Hunding’s + NMG (or Night’s Silence) for stamina sets (5 Hundings).
  • Enchantments at the quality of the gear, if at all. (Some levels of potency rune are expensive or scarce.)
  • Weapon/spell power on the weapon enchants.
  • Stamina/magicka on the armor enchants.
  • 5/1/1, with heavy being the head (because helms can be hidden) and the other “1” being the belt (because belts don’t usually interfere much with aesthetics).

The important bit is the Training trait, because it now gives huge XP advantages. In fact, even my CP 160 characters wear training gear, except in hard content that calls for their best stuff, because I’m not at CP 531 yet. What I do for that is:

  • CP 140 gear for cost effectiveness. (I have near-infinite supplies of CP 140 mats, including potency runes.)
  • Purple quality.
  • Not necessarily weapons. On my main, I just use his gold CP 160 weapons. On my other max character I’ll use similar quality stuff when I’ve decided what to make. :)
  • Careful attention to looks — it is the gear that character will usually wear, and unlike your best gear, it’s likely to be all crafted rather than a mish-mash of drops.

Note that CP 150 set gear, which many of us can easily cobble together, will probably miss the point, as it won’t have the Training trait.
