Welcome to Tamriel Foundry, your resource for news, guides, theorycrafting, and discussion regarding The Elder Scrolls Online. Our community is designed to promote awesome discussion, while connecting ESO fans through friendships, guilds, and community events. This post is a great place to start to learn how you can make the most of your Tamriel Foundry experience.
Forums
Our forums comprise the heart of the website, giving fans a platform for intelligent and focused discussion of game-related issues. Tamriel Foundry does not use a popular forum solution like vBulletin or Vanilla; therefore there are some eccentricities of our forum which are helpful to be aware of.
Rules
Any users who post on the Tamriel Foundry forums are expected to adhere to our Code of Conduct. These rules are designed to protect our forum and ensure that the discussion that occurs on Tamriel Foundry is mature and relevant to our members. Please take a few minutes to look over these rules before posting. Additionally, certain sub-forums like the Roleplaying Corner, Guild Recruitment, and our Class Forums incorporate additional rules for discussion which are unique to those forums. A notification in the new topic or reply form will alert you that you are posting in a forum with special rules.
Recent Topics
Unless you are interested in browsing a specific forum, the easiest way to keep tabs on discussion at Tamriel Foundry is to use our Recent Topics page which you can find beneath the “Forums” tab of our main menu. This page lists all the active topics on TF in chronological order, and is the easiest way to see what new material has been posted since your last visit!
Favorites and “Best-Of” Topics
We want to give our users tools to promote the best discussion, so that really great threads get the attention they deserve. At the top of every topic on Tamriel Foundry, there is a “This Thread Rocks!” button. If there’s a thread that really impresses you because of it’s insight, humor, or general awesome-ness, you should vote for it. The topics which receive the most votes for the week are displayed in a weekly “top 10” list. You can find these topics which were voted the cream of the crop under the “Forums” tab of the main menu, just click on “Best-Of Topics”.
Quoting
One of the best tools to use in discussion is the quote feature, which allows you to grab the text of another user’s post and reply to, or expand upon it directly. Our quote system will include any nested quotes, which sometimes is very useful. Sometimes, however, it is more useful to only respond to a short snippet of a post, rather than the entire thing. We make this easy with selective quoting; just highlight with your mouse the portion of a post that you want to respond to before clicking the quote button, and our quote system will just grab the highlighted text and wrap it in handy quote tags for you! Please quote responsibly, and use selective quoting when possible to keep discussion tidy.
Mentions
An alternative to quoting is to use a mention in order to get another user’s attention. You can mention someone by prefixing their user name with an @ symbol. Please note, that in order to recognize a full username rather than simply a combination of words, it is important to replace spaces and special characters with hyphens. In other words, “Test User” would become @test-user.
Shortcodes
Tamriel Foundry does not support bbCode (a common markup and formatting system on other forums). Instead, our visual editor allows you to use a tremendous variety of formatting options when writing a post. However, we DO support a few “shortcodes” which implement certain special functions not directly supported by the editor. Here are the shortcodes which you can use: (NOTE; to use a shortcode, you must remove the spaces from within the bracketted tags)
- Insert an image – [ img ]http://imagehost.com/your-image-here.jpg[ /img ]
- Quote external text – [ quote ]A short (or long) passage of text[ /quote ]
- Hide text within a spoiler box – [ spoiler title=”Something everyone will see” ]Hidden text that only people who click the “reveal spoiler” button will see.[ /spoiler ]
Reporting Posts
We really appreciate users who follow our site rules and post responsibly, however; you may encounter posts which you find offensive or believe are in violation of our site’s Code of Conduct. In order to quickly and easily direct moderator attention towards inappropriate posts, please make use of the “Report Post” button which is found on every post just to the right of the post timestamp. The report post button looks like a small triangle which contains an exclamation mark, and will allow you to direct a post towards immediate moderator attention!
User Profile
In addition to posting on our forums or responding to articles, some of the best features of Tamriel Foundry allow you to create a community identity which is linked to your character which you play in The Elder Scrolls Online. This section provides an overview of some of the user profile features which can help you establish your niche in the TF community. You can customize the information which is displayed about you by visiting your own profile and clicking the “Edit Profile” button or tab.
Avatars
Avatars are a great way for users to recognize you within the TF community. You may upload a custom image to use as the avatar which appears whenever you interact on Tamriel Foundry. When visiting your user profile, there is a tab for “Change Avatar”. This form allows you to upload an image (off your own computer). We support JPEG and PNG file formats for avatars, but disallow GIF images in avatars. You cannot add an avatar directly from another website, you must first download the image file to your computer before uploading it.
Status Updates
When visiting your user profile, you can post a “status update” which displays next to your name on your profile and in certain community areas. This is a great way to let other people know what’s new in your gaming life, share a clever thought, or even provide an inspirational or funny quote for community enjoyment. Look for the “Whats New” button on your user profile to post a status update.
Biography and Signature
On the homepage of your user profile you can display a long (or short) biography which shares with the Tamriel Foundry community some background about you as an individual, or the backstory of your in-game character in ESO. Biographies are publicly viewable, so please refrain from sharing too much personal information. User biographies are a great place to post your gaming experience, what you are looking forward to about ESO, or a roleplaying backstory for your character that you plan to play in-game.
Like your biography, your signature is an easy way to share some information about yourself with the community. Your signature appears below comments, posts, and private messages that you send on Tamriel Foundry. This is a great place to put an endorsement for your guild, a link to your character sheet, or a quote which you find particularly inspiring. Please note that the maximum allowable height of a user signature is 150 pixels. Any images or text which exceeds this length will be forcibly truncated to fit within that space. If you plan to use images in your signature, I suggest re-sizing them beforehand in order to make sure they will fit!
Contact Methods
On the “Edit Profile” screen, you can optionally share a number of ways that other users can reach you. including on popular social networks or gaming sites. These links are publicly viewable, so please don’t link any information that you do not wish to share.
Character Sheet
One of the best sections to fill out on your user profile is the in-game character settings. This allows you to set your character’s name, race, class, preferred role, and more! This information can be found on your user profile, and gives you a great way to connect with other users in-game.
Ranks, Titles, Post Counts, and Badges
In order to reward and incentivize community involvement, users can unlock ranks, titles, and badges on Tamriel Foundry. Some of these ranks are based on your post count. This post count is incremented whenever you submit a comment to a front-page article, or reply to a forum post. Please be aware, that all commenting and posting is subject to our site rules, so posting purely for the sake of increasing your post count is punished accordingly. As your post count increases, you will unlock new titles that can increase your prestige within the TF community!
In addition to the titles unlocked through posting, there are also certain additional titles and title prefixes which can be earned through exceptional contribution to the community. The exact means for unlocking these extra titles is a secret, so you’ll have to figure them out on your own!
All of your achievements within the Tamriel Foundry community (whether by posting or through community involvement) are rewarded with badges for your user profile. These badges are displayed to share your accomplishments with the rest of the TF community.
Community Systems
After setting up your own user profile, a great opportunity to get involved in Tamriel Foundry is by participating in our community systems. You can establish friendships with other users, and join user groups (guilds) as a way to connect and interact with the rest of the TF community.
Adding Friends
Once you have contributed over 10 posts to Tamriel Foundry, you will unlock the ability to send friendship requests to other users. This ability is withheld from brand new users to prevent spamming of such requests. In order to add another user as a friend, simply visit their user profile and click the “Add Friend” button. Any friendship requests must be first approved by the user you wish to add, so please think carefully about who it makes sense to “friend”. If the person you are adding has no idea who you are, or if you have had no interaction with them on the forums, you should think twice before adding them. Please be sensible, and only add other users with whom you have some sort of connection. You can be reported to moderators for abuse of this system, so please friend responsibly.
Joining Groups
Many guilds are represented on Tamriel Foundry in our guilds directory. If you are already a member of a guild, or perhaps are looking for a new guild to join in ESO, Tamriel Foundry presents a great opportunity to find that group. Some groups are listed as Private, and you must request admittance to these groups. Others are flagged as “Public”, and you can join a public group directly. If you aren’t sure which guild is right for you and want some help finding the right guild for your playstyle, you use the “Looking for Guild” thread to advertise yourself to guild leaders that are in-search of new members.
Submitting a Guild
You may submit your guild to be featured in the guild directory by using our guild submission form. Guild submissions are moderated before being approved, and only submissions of a high quality and degree of thoughtfulness are featured. The guilds directory is purged periodically of any guilds which have been inactive for a period of longer than six months. Updating a guild’s most recent “activity” is as simple as adding a new member or posting a guild status update to the group’s activity feed. If your guild has been removed due to inactivity, you may resubmit it if you wish it to return to our listing.
Private Messages
You may send private messages to other users by using the button on their user profile, or by directly typing their username in the private message compose form. Private messages give users an opportunity to reach out and connect with other members of the Tamriel Foundry community, but they should not be used as an avenue for harassment, annoyance, or abuse. Please send PMs responsibly, and do not engage in mass-mailings, unsolicited guild recruitment messages, or use private messages as a way to engage in behavior otherwise prohibited by our Code of Conduct.
