“There’s been common raids along the merchants’ routes running from Elden Root through to Dune and around Cloudrest. The caravans that survive the attacks say its bandits, and we have the local guard investigating,” Taure took a quick glance at the parchment he was holding, his own scrawls littering the pages, “Dusk requests that we send more troops to help defend against the consistent Maormer attacks. Their reports say the Maormer have yet to gain a strong foothold on the Isles, but the City has begun gathering a militia. Their own troops have, I quote, “fought too long and too hard”. Archen Gangrove will likely be overrun if they don’t receive their troops.” Taure sighed slightly, reading the last item on his list. “Finally,” He looked over at the Queen, “Ayrenn, Emeric requests yet another gathering to discuss the border arrangements. He wants to push the southern border at the Brena river to encompass most of County Kvatch, and requests full control of trade over The Black Road.”

Ayrenn put rest her forehead on her hand, sighing deeply. “Alright, if we get any updates on the bandit raids, please inform me. As for Dusk, we can spare a few hundred soldiers at most, but please inform them that as soon as our own begin to recover we’ll begin reinforcing the Coast regularly. Tell one of the mages to send a response to Emeric, I’ll leave for High Rock within the week. Perhaps I might finally convince him that the terms of the treaty were final. That avaricious child is ever wanting for more.” Taure nodded his head, gesturing to one of the guard to fetch one of the Wizards. As the guard opened the door to leave, a messenger pushed his way through hurriedly, holding out a small envelope.

“Master Tavari,” The messenger looked at Ayrenn for permission to continue, and she nodded slightly in response, “I have a letter addressed to you from the Imperial City. It’s supposed to be of utmost importance.” The small Bosmer pointed at the front of the envelope, where indeed it was written, “Ambassador Taure Tavari of the Aldmeri Dominion,” and below in smaller font, “To be opened upon collection, this letter is of utmost importance.”

Taure gave Ayrenn a look, “I think we were done anyway. I’ll sort out reaching Emeric, we shall speak again later.” The elderly mer just nodded his head in response, and waited for the Queen to leave before sitting at the large table.

“You can leave now, thank you.” The messenger nodded his head and scurried out of the room. Taure looked at the envelope. The handwriting was elegant, and most definitely practiced. The Altmer tore the envelope open, and pulled out the folded parchment within. As he withdrew the letter, another slip of paper fell onto the table. Taure picked it up, and studied the note.

It certainly wasn’t a note. Taure turned the paper around, and was a little surprised at what he saw. The border was beautifully designed, and intricate swirls of golden ink adorned the edges of the paper. In the same calligraphy as on the envelope, the parchment was titled;

“An Invitation to the Masked Ball of one Empress Rhea Petilia,”

In a deep, almost crimson red. That would explain the variety of expensive inks, but still Taure thought it a little ridiculous. Below the title, in plain black ink were the details of said ball,

“Hearthfire 7th, Lordas. The Imperial Palace.
Invitees shall be accompanied by a Palace Guard to the Ballroom upon presentation of their invitation.
Thank you.

Taure sighed, slipped the invitation neatly back into the envelope, and unfolded the piece of parchment on the table.

“Dear Mister Tavari,

You have received this invitation on part of the courtesy of Empress Rhea Petilia, in hope that you may attend. I write to you regarding a personal matter, and though it might not interest you; I do hope that the generosity of the crown would. You among few others, are of a particular group I have personally selected to solve this matter. I have written to each of you in hope that you might accept my proposition, and that you would journey to the Imperial City with haste.

Each of you is exceptionally skilled in a particular field, and I believe you to be the best possible candidates for this assignment. The Emerald Veil, the famed jewelled mask of the Imperial Palace has been stolen. An icon of power and elegance, and an item of great importance to both myself and the people of the Imperial City.

I am offering not only gold, but the utmost sanctity to whomever recovers this stolen relic. And I hope to see you all, so that we might further discuss this proposition.”

Taure sighed again, rubbing his hands against his eyes. He folded the note back up, and slipped it in the envelope alongside the invitation. Pushing himself up from his seat, he hurried out the door; hoping he might catch Ayrenn before their next meeting, to discuss this matter.
