THE TIME OF THE MAGICKA TEMPLAR IS NIGH!

I am currently using terrible gear (Combat Physician, V15 Willpower, trash!) and I can pull 24K DPS on the Daedroths (Crematorium Guards) in vWGT. Magicka Templars with optimised gear can finally compete with the best I feel. So, I have put a lot of thought into the new Orsinium sets coming and theorycrafted what I feel will be best. Note: there is a very tight discrepancy between whether Twice Born Star or Julianos is better, but considering I swap between heal and DD a lot I’d rather not have to constantly chase a second Mundus stone. Hence, I’m preferring Julianos.

I have a lot of people to thank for helping with theorycrafting: most of the people in Hodor (@Alcast, @Paulington, @Selawa, Yolo-Wizard especially for helping with tests and such), @gurpappi, xavierlluis, @AsayreNosferatuzod, @Nifty2g, @RaHimself and others, apologies if I’ve missed anyone important!

This build has been formulated with the idea of flexibility between healing and DPS. For an alternative build that may push higher DPS numbers go check out Nifty’s build:

http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/niftys-damage-build-for-orsinium/

Character information:

My character is a Breton templar for the increased magicka and reduced magicka cost passives. Other viable options are Dunmer, Imperial and Altmer, though I think Breton is best.

Attribute points:

My attributes are all into magicka. I typically run with 16-17K health, 41-42K magicka.

Passives:

http://www.esohead.com/calculator/skills#1.mozz9s85bN7DMbMUf6MbMXv6MbMXO6MbMX28L7JcdoQr6MdoQC6MdoQF6MdoQJ6MdoQK8p7JMdBvj6MdBEI6MdBEp6cdBET8T7JMrqAi6MrqAD6MrqAZ6crqLw8j7DMrJO16MrJPr6MrJPh6MrJPu8n7DMfwgO6MfwgU6Mfwg26Mfwe08t7HMwYl28e7HMi4bD6Mi4bU6Mi4bX6Mi4b16Mi4b48v7HMhy3D6Mhx0n6Mhx0y6Mhx0l6Mhx0B8O7sMA3FN6MA3FA6MA3FL6MA4Cb8P7scLncp6cLncn6zLncy6zLyjz8Y7szjFYb6zjFYd6zjFYf6MjFYi6MjFYh6MjKBj837kMy4Wg6My41N8zc7pcgePB6zgeXm6cgeXA6cgeYc8zf7czNbo6MDVRE6MDVRC6MDVRH8zu7zzHfYE6zHfZd8zG7zzHQ3F8zI7zzJIoX6zJIkL8zN7zzJZcY8zA7zzKpUN8zL7zzK4EX

Mundus Stone:

The Shadow/Thief are the minute seem best. I need to test some more to see which is preferable for this latest setup.

Champion System:

At time of writing I am at ~470 CP.

The Lady – I distribute the points fairly evenly between Thick Skinned, Elemental Defender, and Hardy due to the diminished returns. I also have points in other trees such as Bastion, Quick Recovery, and Spell Shield now I have >400 CP.

The Apprentice – 1 point into Spell Erosion then I’m stacking all the rest into Elfborn.

The Ritual – 100 points into Thaumaturge (increase poison, disease and magic damage dealt).

The Lover – At least 30 points into Arcanist (magicka recovery) to unlock the Synergizer ability (gain ultimate for performing a synergy).

The Tower – 75 points into Magician (reduce magicka cost), then the rest back into magicka recovery.

The bulk of your damage is from Puncturing Sweep and Radiant Oppression, which are both magic damage, hence the rest of my points going into Thaum.

Gear sets:

Armour

 • Head: Kena (medium, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Shoulders: Magnus (light, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Chest: Julianos (heavy, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Hands: Julianos (light, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Waist: Julianos (light, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Legs: Julianos (light, divines, magicka enchantment)
 • Feet: Julianos (light, divines, magicka enchantment)

Note: light, medium and heavy pieces for the full undaunted passive bonus. I will be running full divines to squeeze as much bonus out of my Mundus as possible, but infused on large pieces may be better – I’ll try to test this before I commit. If your health is a bit low then feel free to swap on health enchantments or redistribute your attribute points.

Note 2: Kena proc doesn’t reliably work with DW weaves. An alternative here will be 3-piece Torug and 1-piece Kena, or swap the Torug/Kena for 4-piece Magnus. Another option is the get your 4-5 pieces of Julianos/TBS by having DW swords for these sets then running Overwhelming too (see Nifty’s thread for more details of this). Finally, you can do 5-piece TBS with 4-piece Julianos. I will not run with DW swords to complete my 5-piece bonus as I like to switch between staff/DW for healer hybrid builds too often.

Note 3: 4-piece Magnus is dropped and 1 Kena is introduced. This means that if you have a staff off bar you will still get the benefit of spell damage on both bars (DW and staff) and only lose some magicka recovery on your staff bar. Furthermore, Kena 1-piece also gives weapon damage that will very slightly boost our weaves with DW. Now that is true min maxing. Credit to Jerberan for the suggestion of 1 Kena 3 Magnus.

Jewellery

 • Necklace: Willpower (arcane, spell damage)
 • Ring 1: Willpower (arcane, spell damage)
 • Ring 2: Willpower (arcane, spell damage)
 • Note: if you’re have issues with resources then swap on Spell Cost Reduction glyphs until you find a sustainable balance.

Weapons

 • Bar 1: Magnus Sword X2 (poison damage and absorb magicka, nirnhoned)
 • Bar 2: Magnus Sword X2 (poison damage and absorb magicka, precise)

Notes for Dual Wield: You need the Twin Blade & Blunt passive. Fully unlocked at level 50, you will gain 5% damage while wielding swords to all your skills that scale off spell/weapon damage. Which enchantment where? Doesn’t matter, we tested this recently and both enchantments will proc the same number of times.

Why no 2H sword if my magicka is so high? Latest tests on the PTS show that that 2H Heavy Weapons passive and DW Twin Blade & Blunt are now treated the same, so the extra spell damage from DW and Torug 2-piece surpasses 2H.

Magnus has been chosen over Torug/Kena now for the extra magicka regeneration to help support slotting more Spell Damage enchantments on jewellery. Kena/Torug is still very viable if you want more raw spell damage and a bit more health, however.

Skill Bars:

Bar 1 – Single Target DPS

 • Inner light for the 5% increased magicka and Major Prophecy boost.
 • Structured entropy for Major Sorcery boost.
 • Purifying Light* is a cheap instant cast, will do ~20K damage (scales off max magicka), off heals, grants ultimate, minor sorcery. It is amazing. If you’re a Dunmer with flame damage passives then Vampire’s Bane is an alternative here.
 • Puncturing Sweep is your main DPS skill for single target until enemy is ~25% health.
 • Radiant Oppression is your execute skill for when enemy is <25% health. Note: this is useless pre-execute now, no point using until 25% health.
 • Ice Comet ultimate. Shooting Star is fine too, but Ice Comet does more damage. I have this ultimate slotted on both bars now for the passive increase to max magicka (helps Purifying Light) and magicka regeneration as this is a very costly build to run!
 • *Alternatives: Blazing Spear or a Mage Guild ability. If you don’t have a racial passive for 10% increased max magicka then Purifying Light may be a DPS loss for you. Alternative rotations I’ve tested are to simply do Sweeps until execute, or do Sweeps with Blazing Spear up. Both netted roughly the same DPS. Slot a Mage Guild ability to boost max magicka/recovery if you just want to Sweep.

Rotation details: Put Purifying Light on the enemy granting you and your team Minor Sorcery. Activate Entropy for Major Sorcery and Might of the Guild passive (Empower on next hit) then drop Ice Comet as you close the gap. Immediately start doing Puncturing Sweep with medium attack weaves. Refresh Purifying Light on cool down, likewise for Structured Entropy. Start executing at 25% with Radiant Oppression – do not worry about refreshing Purifying Light during execute, but make sure Major Sorcery is up at all times.

Pro tip: Spell Power Pots (Detection Pots) for Major Sorcery would be better as you don’t waste time activating Structured Entropy. Use potions on cool down for maximum DPS. However, still activate Entropy before dropping your ultimate for the Empower boost!

Bar 2 – AoE DPS

 • Inner Light – see above
 • Channeled Focus for sustain as this is a costly build to run. Swap bars and drop this if you think you’ll need it. Always be sitting on it for AoE situation.
 • Solar Barrage* is a powerful AoE that grants the Empower bonus on follow-up attacks.
 • Blazing Spear the spear does great damage and will return stamina to the group if they synergise.
 • Proximity Detonation* undisputed AoE damage for magicka Templar builds. Worth the grind in PvP.
 • Ice Comet great passives from the Mage Guild for slotting here too. Preferably use from your main bar, however.
 • *Consuming Trap is a viable alternative for either of these (Soul Magic skill tree, World section) as this does magic damage to 3 enemies and will return resources upon them dying. It is a DPS loss to keep using on cool down, but if you’re struggling for resources then pop a few of these on adds.

AoE rotation details: Make sure you have Entropy up for Major Sorcery (bar swap to reapply or pop a potion to keep this up). I make sure I’m sitting on my Channeled Focus then activate Proximity. While Proximity is charging you use Solar Barrage for Empower, throw Blazing Spear, then spam Solar Barrage until Proximity detonates, then repeat this rotation. You want to make sure you give the initial hit of Blazing Spear the Empower bonus as well as the Proximity explosion!

Screenshots of DPS:

Apologies these are rare lately. I’m often running Spell Power Cure and not my optimised build. Here is a boss fight with my gear though.
