BACKGROUND/TL;DR : I have a v5 templar that will be end-game viable come DB, and I want to run a heal-tank setup. Advice?
Hey guys, so with DB coming up, I have some sub-v16 characters that have been on the shelf for awhile and I am getting ready to dust off. Combined with the changes to heavy armor, and the fact that my Sorc main is probably going to be sitting this update out for awhile, I wanted to leverage my v5 templar and try something new. I am an experienced Sorc Healer and mediocre DPS, so I figured I would be a real healer now and play templar. However, as I am not a stellar DPS, and I already played the heal/dps playstyle on my Sorc, I want to try something a little different with my templar. Namely, heal-tanking.
So, a few restrictions I have placed on myself while building this character before I get into my questions for you guys:
1.) All crafted gear. I don’t have the time any more to grind content for gear, so outside jewelry, I am sticking strictly to crafted gear for my setup. I also care a lot about how I look, so crafted gear is the only way to have 100% control over that.
2.) I am going to be a magicka-based heal-tank. Duh. My templar is a breton BTW.
3.) I want to be wearing 5 pieces of heavy. This is not only because the sets I am choosing primarily support the healing aspects of my toon, not mitigation, but also because I think it would be fun to try the new HA mechanics, and run with some styles that I am not used to.
4.) This build is pretty much just for 4-man content. I do not have any delusions of performing the heal-tank role in Trials, nor do I particularly care about PvP for this toon.
Okay, on the questions. These all mainly stem from one, simple fact: I have never really tanked. I am very familiar with the role of healer, and I understand the theory behind tanking (boss face away from the party, condense trash for AoE burn, etc.). What I don’t know are what my stats should look like for magicka tanking, and how templars achieve some of the tank’s responsibilities, like CC and mob manipulation. So, here we go:
1.) What mitigation numbers do I need to see? Buffed, I know I need around 33k to hit cap, but is phy or spell res more important? Should they be equal? How much should I rely on buffs for mitigation?
2.) How much health do I REALLY need? My goal is about 28-30k, but do I need more? Is 30k already overkill? I am planning to take advantage of the constituion passive, which is getting buffed in DB.
3.) Max stam/mag and regen stats; target numbers? This would be relatively easy for just tanking, I think, but since I am heal-tanking, I think that I need at least 30k magicka. Does that sounds about right? How low can I go on my stamina pool and still be safe? Is stam regen still horribly useless for tanks because of the blocking regen thing? Or should I shoot for maybe 1k stam regen and 1.5k+ mag regen?
4.) For all the templars out there: how do you control mobs? No chains, no talons, no encase, no ash cloud. I am not a templar expert, but am I missing something? Do you just spam Inner Fire at everything that moves?
5.) How about gear? My current thoughts are 5 Kagrenac’s Hope and 4 Magnus/Eyes of Mara, 3 Willpower(healthy), double SnB bars, 5/1/1 Heavy/med/light. This directly improves my healing abilities (actually exactly what I use for healing on my sorc, but in light armor), while still giving me desirable stats for tanking. Will sustaing be an issue with this setup? Am I sacrificing too much mitigation? Should I try to incorporate Hist Bark or Seducer’s instead?
Finally, does anyone who has heal-tanked on a templar have any general advice? What setup do you use? I would ask about traits, but no one knows how the changes in DB will shake out yet, so I will refrain.
Thanks for any help you guys can give, and tagging @mrowmrif2 for the general tanking advice. And yes mrow, I KNOW it doesn’t make any sense to start planning a build before the PTS changes go live, but I am doing it anyways
